Santa Clara Soccer Park: State of the Art

by Chuck Blair

The Santa Clara Youth Soccer Park is the result of the unanimous support of the City Council and diligent work by a committee of local residents.

Construction has entered its final stages, and is expected to provide three full-sized, lighted soccer fields that will bring tournament and international play to Santa Clara.  A variety of camps and clinics also will be provided to Santa Clara's youth.

Kevin Moore, president of the Friends of the Santa Clara Soccer Park, looks forward to youth sprinting on the fields and the first cheers of local parents supporting their children.

"Santa Clara has a tradition of building excellent sporting facilities," Moore said.  "First we had Washington Park and the International Swim Center.  Now Santa Clara is continuing its investment in youth with the Soccer Park.

"I am proud to live in a City that supports its youth!," Moore said.  "Former Councilwoman and co-founder Lisa Gillmor is my choice to toss out the first ball when the fields open.  If it wasn't for Lisa, we still would be looking at a vacant dirt lot."

Augie Marques, president of the Santa Clara Sporting Club and vice-president of the Santa Clara Soccer Park said "This will be the finest youth  soccer facility in the State of California.  We will provide world-class opportunities for local teams!"

The facility has been constructed by Bothman Construction and Jay Beals of the Beals Group.  The Master Plan was approved by the City Council in 1999 and groundbreaking occured August 7, 2000.

According to Larry Wolfe, Director of Parks and Recreation, the 11.5 acre site will be gated to provide safety for local youth.  "At every stage of site preparation, we have sought to make the facility up to FIFA's international standards.  And, since the Soccer Park is focused on youth, the City is taking special care to create a safe facility."

Construction will continue throughout the winter months, with the facility expected to open in Spring 2003.
